Nuclear minister joins me at Wylfa

The Nuclear Minister joined me at Wylfa this week following the UK government reaching a deal to buy the site from Hitachi.

I have campaigned tirelessly for the game changing purchase to happen and the Chancellor announced the deal at the Budget on Wednesday.

Andrew Bowie travelled to the island on Thursday to get a look at the site and the pair discussed next steps as the UK ramps up new nuclear power capacity to meet energy security and net zero targets.

I was delighted to host the nuclear minister and bend his ear on what is next for Wylfa now it is finally in the UK government’s hands.

I want to work as fast as possible to get the greenlight for a large-scale nuclear power plant or a host of small modular reactors, or both as soon as possible followed quickly by spades in the ground.

No better vote of confidence can be put in our island than spending ten of millions on this site and I believe its purchase is the key that unlocks investment and jobs for our island as a vital part of the government’s civil nuclear plans.

Of course, there is more work to do and more to ensure that the island benefits from the investment with jobs and infrastructure that comes with such a huge project.

As everyone knows, I won’t stop now because we have made this progress. My priority remains jobs and investment for Ynys Môn.

Andrew Bowie said: "As the Chancellor said, this purchase would not have happened if it wasn't for the tireless work of Virginia.

"The buying of Wylfa very much shows that Ynys Môn and the wider North Wales region has a vital role in delivering the UK's nuclear ambitions."

I am delighted that, after much hard work, on 22 May 2024 the UK Government gave a firm commitment to a gigawatt new nuclear plant at Wylfa. Following the purchase of the Wylfa site by Great British Nuclear (GBN) in March 2024, this latest announcement gives local people the secure and stable futur
